McCarthy continues to ignore calls from his own majority to expel Santos

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA-42) triggered a floor vote on his resolution to expel disgraced Rep. George Santos from the House of Representatives following Santos’s (R-NY-3) arrest last week. Countless House Republicans — including all of Santos’s fellow New York GOP freshmen — have called for Santos to resign. But Speaker Kevin McCarthy has remained silent, refusing to answer whether Republicans will try to table the resolution and ignoring calls from his own majority.

George Santos is a fraud and a serial liar — even his own Republican colleagues have called for him to be removed. But Speaker McCarthy is nowhere to be found. Just last month, McCarthy twisted the arms of his MAGA majority members to vote for radical, unpopular measures like massive cuts to Veterans benefits. Now, will he ask them to stand with disgraced Santos, too? His majority should decide how long they’re willing to stick around on a sinking ship.”

Accountable.US president Kyle Herrig.

A report from Accountable.US revealed that a group of GOP House leaders including McCarthy gave nearly $200,000 to Santos’s campaign during the 2022 election, despite apparent knowledge of his lies.

In December, Accountable.US led the charge by filing a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics requesting an investigation if Santos is sworn in. In January, Accountable.US filed a complaint against Santos over campaign finance violations with the Federal Elections Commission, and now the Justice Department is investigating the matter.
