Today, government watchdog Accountable.US blasted Republicans in Congress for showering George Santos with nearly $200,000 in campaign cash during the 2022 election despite apparent widespread awareness among senior House Republicans over his fraudulent claims and fabricated background.

The con George Santos pulled on the people of New York was papered over by nearly $200,000 in campaign cash from House Republicans who saw red flags but turned a blind eye to advance their MAGA agenda. Republicans in Congress should be ashamed. Rather than asking Santos tough questions about his outlandish claims and exposing his shady background, they just asked him where to send the check.”

Recent reporting in the New York Post revealed that senior House Republicans were so aware of Santos’s lies that the topic became a ‘running joke’ — with Speaker Kevin McCarthy even saying he “always had a few questions” about Santos’s resume. A new report from Accountable shows that, despite these apparent concerns, Santos received nearly $200,000 from GOP House leaders including Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, and others.

Earlier this month, Accountable.US filed a complaint against Santos over campaign finance violations with the Federal Elections Commission, and a request for investigation with the Office of Congressional Ethics over his misleading or false biographical and personal financial claims.
