Alliance Defending Freedom leads anti-abortion crusade, bankrolls anti-democracy groups

WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, a federal appeals court panel made up of three extremist Federalist Society judges ruled to restrict access to a critical, widely-used abortion medication. The case was brought and backed by none other than Alliance Defending Freedom, a known hate group infamous for bankrolling anti-democratic, anti-LGBTQ organizations in favor of a dangerous, radical agenda.

This is the latest in Alliance Defending Freedom’s crusade to strip everyday Americans of their critical rights,” said Accountable.US spokesperson Yael Sheinfeld. “They’ll stop at nothing to force a radical, unpopular agenda on Americans — and the extremist Federalist Society judges on the Fifth Circuit are happy to play along.”

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) successfully “judge-shopped” the abortion pill case, ensuring the case would rest in the hands of Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, a Trump-appointed Texas judge who has deep ties to former Federalist Society vice president Leonard Leo. Leo led the decades-long campaign to overturn Roe by selecting anti-choice judges, challenging abortion rights at all levels of government, and supporting anti-choice advocacy groups like Susan B. Anthony and Students for Life.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has long-designated Alliance Defending Freedom as a hate group for its efforts to roll back critical civil rights. ADF was behind the recent Supreme Court case 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, which undid decades of civil rights protections for LGBTQ Americans. ADF helped overturn Roe v. Wade, and then sued to remove the abortion pill from the national market. The group also used a massive influx in funding to bankroll extremist anti-democratic organizations including the Child & Parental Rights Campaign, the Family Foundation of Virginia, and the Ethics and Public Policy Center.
