WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the GOP-controlled House Committee on Energy and Commerce held its first hearing of the new Congress. As expected, GOP committee members spent the entire hearing deflecting blame for Big Oil’s widespread price gouging, calling for so-called “energy expansion,” and fear-mongering over the country’s perceived lack of energy independence.

However, both calls for energy expansion and their partisan rhetoric ignore several basic facts about the US energy landscape. In response, Accountable.US released the following statement debunking the MAGA majorities’ erroneous calls for more giveaways to Big Oil and exposing the industry’s massive profits and their stockpile of unused federal land permits.

If today was a sign of what's to come, future House Energy and Commerce Committee hearings will be reduced to GOP members regurgitating Big Oil’s false talking points while openly advocating for energy policies that favor wealthy executives and shareholders over their own constituents. Even on a day when three of the country’s largest oil companies posted a whopping $82.5 billion in profits for 2022, thanks to the unrelenting price gouging of American consumers, the MAGA majority can not stop themselves from doing the industry’s bidding.”
