Watchdog: Trump Letting Wealthy Tax Cheats Off the Hook, While Workers Get Stiffed

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reports that the Trump administration is firing 6,700 IRS employees today who are “by and large people who ‘go after tax evasion’” is the clearest sign to date the President is more focused on making his super-wealthy donors richer—including helping cheats dodge their tax responsibilities—than lowering costs for working people.
Who benefits from less IRS enforcement? Rich tax cheats. A 2023 Senate Finance Committee analysis found nearly 1,000 millionaires had not even bothered to file tax returns despite owing an estimated $34 billion in taxes. All told, a 2024 IRS report found tax evasion by millionaires and billionaires is costing the U.S. Treasury $150 billion a year. The non-partisan CBO has also warned that gutting IRS enforcement resources would add billions of dollars to the deficit.
Who loses? Everyday workers, seniors, veterans, disadvantaged children. Allowing wealthy tax dodgers to avoid their fair share in taxes means less money in the Treasury for critical services that level the playing field for everyday Americans. The Trump administration’s IRS firing spree goes hand in hand with its plan for another giant tax giveaway to billionaires and price-gouging corporations, paid for by gutting Medicaid, jacking up health care premiums, raising housing costs for working families, and slashing food aid for the most vulnerable.
“Once again President Trump is taking steps to let super-rich tax cheats, including big donors, get away with not paying their fair share,” said Tony Carrk, Executive Director of Accountable.US. “Less IRS enforcement against billionaire tax dodgers means a bigger deficit and fewer resources to help everyday working people get ahead. Add to the equation another wasteful tax giveaway for Trump’s billionaire and corporate contributors, and everyday Americans will be left further behind, dealing with higher costs and less health security. It’s all part of the Trump administration’s Wealthy-First, Workers-Last agenda.”
