If Past is Prologue, Americans Can Expect a Devastating Increase in Housing and Health Care Costs

WASHINGTON, DC – Missing in today’s tax “plan” from Rep. Smith today was how they plan to pay for cutting taxes for the wealthiest in our country and massive corporations. And we know why. Because the cuts they are proposing take money and help from working families to pay off their donors and enrich themselves. Here are some ways Republicans in Congress plan to pay for huge tax giveaways to the wealthy :

  • Cutting Medicaid, immediately causing 3 million Americans to lose their coverage – with more to come Current proposals to cut Medicaid could lead to nine states with “trigger” laws on the books to automatically eliminate plans if the federal funding fell below 90%, impacting at least three million adults.

  • Jacking up health care premiums for 4 million Americans: Both RSC and House Budget Committee plans would ultimately raise premiums by ending tax credits put in place in 2021, hiking premiums by as much as 300% and putting 4 million people in jeopardy of losing coverage of the premium tax credit.

  • Raising housing costs for working families: Donald Trump’ budget proposals seek to cut vital housing assistance by eliminating 10% of funding for the Housing Choice Vouchers, omitting bipartisan agreements set during the 2023 federal debt ceiling debates.

  • Cuts to SNAP, a program millions of Americans rely on to pay for food, including close to 42 million during the pandemic: The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) warns policy proposals from Republicans, Trump, and the far-right Project 2025 could “cut benefits for all” SNAP beneficiaries and remove millions from the program.

“Congressional Republicans are already trying to hide from the bottom line of how they will pay for their tax scam for the ultra-wealthy and corporations, but Americans deserve to know what they would be faced to reckon with under this plan: loss of health care, hiking the cost of health care premiums, increased housing costs, and devastating cuts to programs that feed millions of Americans,” said Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk. “Put simply, this plan is a betrayal to working families across America and the latest backtrack on Trump’s campaign promise to lower costs for the American people. Tens of millions – if not more – of Americans’ lives will face higher costs and a diminished quality of life all in service of the billionaires and corporations that Trump is letting call the shots.”
