Senators Whitehouse, Durbin ask Leo for full accounting of gifts to SCOTUS justices

WASHINGTON, DC – Following a damaging Supreme Court term where conservative kingpin Leonard Leo’s influence was on full display, Leo is again found at the center of the Supreme Court corruption crisis with new congressional action. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today sent letters to Leo and two right-wing billionaires requesting information on payments and gifts given to Supreme Court justices.

With the Supreme Court corruption crisis at a fever pitch, it’s no surprise that Leonard Leo is right in the middle. He’s the corrupting influence responsible for the rot, and it’s far past time he be forced to answer for his decades-long court manipulation scheme,” said Accountable.US senior advisor Kyle Herrig.

“Chief Justice Roberts has refused to clean up his Court, forcing Congress to step in. Whether by Roberts or Congress, we need accountability and reform now,” Herrig continued.

The action follows a bombshell report from ProPublica last month detailing Justice Alito’s luxury Alaskan fishing vacation with Republican billionaires Paul Singer and Robin Arkley II — organized and attended by Leonard Leo.

For nearly two decades, Leonard Leo has been at the center of the right-wing’s court capture campaign, stacking the federal bench with partisans working to undermine constitutional freedoms, roll back critical civil rights protections, and weaken democracy. Through the courts, Leo is enacting his radical and unpopular agenda including overturning Roe v. Wade, expanding gun rights, restricting crucial environmental protections, and with the most recent decisions, striking down student debt forgiveness and allowing discrimination against LGBTQ couples.
