WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared live sports without audiences “essential businesses,” notably giving entertainment company WWE a pass to reopen and resume live shows for broadcast as much of the state remains shuttered.

The move comes as no surprise — WWE executives have a foot in the door with Trump, and billions of dollars to protect. Linda McMahon, the wife of WWE CEO Vince McMahon, is Trump’s former Small Business Administration (SBA) administrator, and now runs one of his super PACs. Prior to joining the Trump administration, Linda McMahon also worked as a WWE executive.

DeSantis’ move is a boon for WWE, which was struggling to profit and found its recent billion-dollar TV deal under threat after its ratings took a downturn even prior to COVID-19.

“We are in the middle of a public health crisis and the American people need to know the government is putting their needs first. It is unfortunate but hardly surprising that corporate executives with close ties to President Trump are receiving special treatment from his allies. Like wrestling, the fix is in,” said Accountable.US President Kyle Herrig.
