Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver spent the bulk of this week’s show diving deeper into the dangerous threat Project 2025 poses to our democracy by eroding checks and balances and concentrating more power with the president in a potential future conservative administration.

Oliver highlighted Project 2025’s plans to dismantle or neuter critical government agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Department of Justice, and end programs like Head Start. He also outlined the plan to reintroduce Schedule F, an executive order that would reclassify federal civil servants as political appointees, giving the president unprecedented control to hire and fire tens of thousands of individuals across the federal government.

In his segment, Oliver highlighted two Project 2025 architects in particular: Russ Vought, former director of the Office of Management and Budget under Trump, and John McEntee, former head of the White House personnel office. As Oliver notes: “Their goal here is clear: to assemble an army of vetted, trained staff who can begin dismantling the administrative state from day one. Which is a little weird if you think about it. They’re assembling an army of future government bureaucrats who hate the government.”

Vought wrote the chapter on the executive office of the president in Project 2025’s manifesto and was tasked with compiling the broader playbook for the first 180 days of a potential future conservative administration. During the Trump Administration, McEntee turned the personnel office into a loyalty police force and “helped set the stage for the January 6 assault on the Capitol.”
