Ad: Veterans Among Hardest Hit By Extreme MAGA Default Plan
Nonpartisan government watchdog Accountable.US launched a digital ad in 20 Congressional Districts today calling out House Republicans who promise to protect veterans’ best interests but voted for the MAGA House Majority default plan that jeopardizes the care and food assistance of millions of veterans. In addition to Facebook ads, Accountable.US today released fact-sheets outlining the specific consequences for seniors, veterans, and vulnerable families in these Members’ districts under the extreme MAGA default plan. So many House Republicans that claim to look out for veterans lined up to pass a default bill loaded with extreme cuts that will reduce veterans’ quality of care and leave many food insecure. Now House Republicans are desperately trying to mislead veterans that they would be spared by the MAGA plan’s cuts that are so deep there’s no way to isolate veterans from the damage. The MAGA House Majority offers Americans nothing but a lose-lose proposition: extreme cuts that especially hurt veterans and seniors -- or a default crisis that will wreck the economy and hurt these communities in other ways. The MAGA Majority should stop playing dangerous political games with their constituents’ lives. The sooner the Republican House responsibly passes a clean bill allowing the nation to pay its bills without cruel cuts, the less harm will be inflicted on Americans of all walks of life.”

BACKGROUND: With the U.S. Treasury expected to run out of money as early as June 1st, Congress has a responsibility to allow the nation to pay its bills. If Congress does not act and allows a default, the economic consequences would be swift and severe – from plummeting markets, frozen credit, lost jobs and a likely recession, disruptions to critical benefits like Social Security, and soaring interest rates on everything from car loans to mortgages. Yet House Republicans are holding the economy hostage by passing a bill loaded with unpopular and extreme ransom demands that promise pain for millions of average Americans including veterans, seniors, students, children, workers, and the food insecure. They voted to ship 100,000 high-paying manufacturing jobs overseas while going out of their way to protect wealthy tax cheats and debt-ballooning tax breaks for billionaires and profiteering corporations. The most responsible way forward is to pass a clean bill allowing the nation to meet its prior debt obligation.
