Leaders of True the Vote Found In Contempt of Court in Election Conspiracy Case
WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier this week, leaders of the anti-democracy group True the Vote, Gregg Phillps, and Catherine Engelbrecht were found to be in contempt of court. The pair were held in contempt for failing to reveal who was in attendance during a meeting in which they allegedly received information about election vendor Konnech storing voter information on a Chinese server. The charges stem from a lawsuit filed by the election vendor after True the Vote spent months publicly spreading racist and baseless conspiracy theories about the vendor’s CEO in their desperate attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
In response, Accountable.US is re-releasing detailed research and in-depth analysis on True the Vote, exposing their track record of spreading conspiracy theories, advocating laws attacking voting rights, and their fringe right-wing agenda. The organization was one of 8 groups profiled in Accountable.US’ recent Monitoring Influence releases focusing on anti-voting rights groups.
It's encouraging to see election deniers and right-wing extremists being held accountable for their blatant disregard of the rule of law. However, True the Vote is only the tip of the iceberg. Election deniers, anti-democracy groups, and the wealthy donors who fund them remain an existential threat to our democracy. Americans should stay vigilant as the midterm elections rapidly approach.”

Key findings from Accountable.US’ profile on True the Vote include:
- True the Vote pushes disinformation about mail-in voting, promotes the QAnon conspiracy theory, and filed suits to purge voter rolls in various states.
- Members of True the Vote appeared as “stars” of 2000 Mules, a debunked documentary about voter fraud during the 2020 election, directed by conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza.
- Ahead of the 2020 election, True the Vote worked to recruit police officers and former military to serve as poll watchers — an effort dubbed the “Continue to Serve” initiative.
- True the Vote has been accused of illegal coordination with state Republican parties. A Texas judge likened True the Vote and King Street Patriots to a GOP “front group” in a ruling that claimed the groups operated as a PAC.
