Ahead of today’s House Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee hearing, government watchdog Accountable.US released a new report revealing the hypocrisy behind MAGA Republicans’ political stunt and the radical extremism of their key witnesses.

Instead of prioritizing issues that matter to everyday Americans, these MAGA Republicans are choosing to put on yet another political stunt. Today’s hearing is nothing more than a desperate attempt to distract from the dangerous, unpopular agenda extreme conservatives’ own dark money machine is working to force on the American people."

Accountable.US President Caroline Ciccone

The new Accountable.US report reveals the problematic pasts of key witnesses at today’s hearing. Witness and Capital Research Center president Scott Walter has a long history of radical extremism, from his numerous racially charged comments to his time working for a top anti-LGBTQ group to his peddling serious election lies. Witness and Foundation for Government Accountability legal director Stewart Whitson has used his role at the Leo-linked and Uihlein-backed organization to uplift election conspiracies and spread harmful misinformation.

The report highlights the hypocrisy at play as MAGA Republicans in Congress attempt to distract from their own dark money machine, specifically regarding the right-wing “dark money ATM” DonorsTrust, which has seen its coffers swell thanks to conservative kingpin Leonard Leo and his dark money nonprofit network.

Just over the past five years, increasing annual contributions to DonorsTrust has allowed the donor-advised fund to act as a “go-between” for right-wing funders to funnel more money to the nation’s most extreme conservative organizations. And in 2022 alone, a $92 million donation from a key organization in Leonard Leo’s network accounted for nearly a third of all contributions to DonorsTrust that year, underscoring the outsized influence that Leo — who has never held public office — has on American politics and society.
