Extremist group brings conspiracies, hate to Philadelphia

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the recently-designated anti-government extremist group Moms for Liberty will kick off its national “Joyful Warriors” summit in Philadelphia, ushering in a long weekend filled with far-right extremism, unfounded conspiracies, and hateful rhetoric. The four-day conference underscores just how quickly the mainstream conservative movement has welcomed the right-wing extremist group with open arms.

Best known for their aggressive attacks on public schools and teachers, Moms for Liberty is a key player in a broader scheme by right-wing activists to undermine trust in public schools in support of policies that privatize education.

Moms for Liberty has found itself in the spotlight in recent weeks after an Indiana chapter quoted Adolf Hitler in its inaugural newsletter, sparking backlash. And that wasn’t the first time Moms for Liberty had quoted Hitler — the same quote was also spotted at a 2021 event in Florida.

Here’s what else you need to know about Moms for Liberty:

  • They call white supremacists and insurrectionists friends. Moms for Liberty has close ties to violent right-wing extremist groups including the Three Percenters, the Oath Keepers, and the Proud Boys — all of which played prominent roles in the attempted insurrection on January 6th. In fact, this year’s national summit even features KrisAnne Hall, a Moms for Liberty member who spoke at a white nationalist conference and is a member of the Oath Keepers.
  • They were just deemed an anti-government extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the most high profile organizations tracking hate and extremism in the United States. The Center identified Moms for Liberty and similar organizations as leading the charge in a new battle against inclusivity in schools, though they draw ideas rooted in age-old white supremacy.
  • They’re working to erode public education everywhere. Moms for Liberty attacks public schools across the country by supporting far-right candidates for school boards, pushing book bans, and working with state and local governments to enact burdensome restrictions on teachers and school districts — all in an effort to privatize schools, a key right-wing goal since desegregation.
