WASHINGTON, DC – Today marks the start of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the MAGA confab filled with debunked conspiracy theories, far-right extremist beliefs, and attacks on our democracy.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of this year’s CPAC:

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES: The American Conservative Union, CPAC’s host, claims to be a “grassroots” organization but is actually bankrolled by some of the wealthiest conservative foundations and dark money groups including Leonard Leo’s 85 Fund and DonorsTrust, the Mercer Family Foundation, and the Bradley Foundation.

MAGA MAJORITY: Elise Stefanik, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz and other key members of the House MAGA majority are scheduled to speak, underscoring the power of the far-right fringe faction in House leadership.

LEGAL TROUBLES: The disgraced Matt Schlapp continues to serve as CPAC chair, hosting a platform for extremists to socialize and strategize. Last year, Accountable.US filed a complaint with DC attorney general Brian Schwalb, alleging that Schlapp repeatedly violated his fiduciary obligations as a member of the ACU board of directors and an officer of CPAC.

CPAC is the place to be for far-right extremists, conspiracy theorists, and anti-democracy activists, and this year will be no different. The yearly radical confab is bankrolled by key conservative foundations and dark money groups working to undermine progress and roll back rights — and they have the ears of House MAGA majority leaders.”
