Watchdog: With Hegseth Confirmation, Senate Republicans Show There’s No Bottom to What They’ll Accept from Trump Administration, the Public Be Damned

Washington D.C. – In the dead of night, all but three Senate Republicans voted to confirm Pete Hegseth as President Trump’s U.S. Defense Secretary over the concerns from former top military officials about his inexperience and ability to protect our national security interests – and despite Hegseth’s extremist views against women and major ethical problems as a former non-profit leader repeatedly ousted for misconduct, accused rapist, and alleged white supremacist, fall down drunk and wife abuser. As Retired Major General William Enyart warned: “If Hegseth is confirmed, he’ll be the most spectacularly unqualified person ever nominated and ever confirmed to the position.”
Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk released the following statement following the vote:
“So fearful of failing the Trump loyalty test, nearly all Senate Republicans went along with making a walking ethical nightmare with no relevant experience managing a large organization as our next Defense Secretary. These Senators have not only endangered our national security, but by confirming an accused serial abuser who thinks women don’t belong in combat, they have sent an unmistakable message to the women in our armed forces who risk their lives every day that their sacrifice is unappreciated by our leaders. Mr. Hegseth’s confirmation hearing raised more questions than it answered, and shows Republican Senators just don’t care so long as the President is appeased. This confirmation shows that most Republican Senators are willing to rubber-stamp the lowest common denominator from the Trump administration even when it puts everyday Americans in harm’s way. That’s terrifying.”
