Last month, John Eastman, disgraced right-wing activist attorney and central figure in the attempts to overturn the 2020 election, filed an amicus brief in favor of a lawsuit brought by the predatory payday loan industry that seeks to gut the popular Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by striking down its independent funding structure and leave it beholden to the political whims of Congress. Today, Eastman was confirmed as an “unindicted co-conspirator No. 2” from the newly announced indictment against former President Trump in charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.”  Government watchdog Accountable.US called Eastman’s endorsement of the lawsuit expected before the U.S. Supreme Court next term emblematic of the shady, extreme, and conflicted characters that have rallied behind the payday loan industry’s meritless case. Eastman’s involvement should also be of grave concern to consumers given his close ties to ethically-challenged Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni.

It says it all about the ‘merits’ of the predatory lenders’ case against the CFPB that an unindicted conspirator in the violent coup attempt on January 6th is among their top cheerleaders, alongside shady industry special interests with an ax to grind against the bureau. It’s more alarming than ever how cozy Mr. Eastman is with Justice Thomas and his wife as the Supreme Court considers whether to go along with potentially the most devastating rollback of consumer protections in U.S. history. The cabal of conflicted and extreme characters coming for the CFPB are only interested in shuttering an agency that has been so effective at recouping billions of ill-gotten dollars on behalf of everyday families who’ve fallen victim to financial industry abuse, scams and deception.”
