WASHINGTON, DC — Last night, President-elect Trump nominated Andrew Ferguson to lead the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Ferguson currently serves as a FTC commissioner, where he has used his power to undermine the agency’s work protecting consumers.

The Federal Trade Commission has a responsibility to protect consumers against greedy and dishonest corporate actors. Rather than take that initiative head-on, President-elect Trump is installing a leader who puts political disputes over consumer-focused regulations.”

During his FTC tenure, Ferguson has argued against the agency’s authority to protect American consumers. Just last month, Ferguson dissented on a rule protecting seniors from telemarketing scams “not because it is bad policy, but because the time for rulemaking by the Biden-Harris FTC is over.” He has since voted in favor of three FTC actions. Additionally, he dissented on the FTC’s non-compete rule and challenged the constitutionality of the agency’s protections of administrative judges.

Instead, he has attacked Big Tech companies accused of stifling conservative political speech, arguing that the FTC “must use the full extent of its authority to protect the free speech of all Americans.”
