Watchdog to Admin: Ignoring Guidelines Reveals “Depth of the Administration’s Incompetence

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tonight, reporting in POLITICO revealed that the Trump administration failed to follow guidelines laid out in an almost 70-page National Security Council playbook from 2016 that would have helped the government marshal its vast resources to fight COVID-19.

Among the guidelines were timelines on when to assemble stockpiles of personal protective equipment (PPE), which many health care workers fighting COVID-19 still lack months after the administration first learned of the virus, and invoking the Defense Protection Act (DPA), on which Trump has lagged behind.

“Trump’s COVID-19 response has failed to protect the country, and now we find out his administration had a step-by-step playbook for addressing a pandemic, yet chose to ignore it? It’s shameful,” said Accountable.US President Kyle Herrig. “It’s been clear from the start of this public health crisis that the Trump administration was ill-prepared to respond. But the fact that it had an in-depth resource available that it opted not to follow reveals the depth of the administration’s incompetence.”
