Ahead of Senate Republicans’ Reconciliation Meetings, a Reminder: Key Votes Have Vowed Not to Cut Medicaid

WASHINGTON, DC – Next week, Senate Republicans are expected to meet caucus-wide to discuss their reconciliation bill, which includes both historic tax cuts for the ultra-rich and historic cuts to healthcare that tens of millions of Americans rely on.

Rightfully so, there are a decisive number of Senate Republicans who’ve publicly voiced their concerns about cuts to Medicaid. Without these members, Trump’s big, beautiful betrayal  that guts healthcare for 16 million Americans, won’t pass

  • Senator Josh Hawley: “Just had a great talk with President Trump about the Big, Beautiful Bill. He said again, NO MEDICAID BENEFIT CUTS.”
  • Senator Lisa Murkowski: “That’s why people like Josh [Hawley] and myself and others have weighed in very early … in saying that Medicaid cuts that hurt states like Alaska — that is heavily reliant on Medicaid — are not going to be acceptable.”
  • Senator Susan Collins: “I’ve said that if there are deep cuts in Medicaid that would endanger healthcare for low-income families, for disabled children, for other vulnerable populations, and for our rural hospitals, I’m simply not going to support that.”
  • Senator Eric Schmitt:I don’t support any cuts to benefits for Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.”

Now is the time for these Senators to practice what they preach. A vote for the current bill is a vote to take away their constituents’ healthcare – full stop. If these Senators do the right thing, they will save the healthcare of millions of people from Alaska to Maine. But if they throw their support behind this bill, not only will they have lied to the American people, they will be ripping healthcare from those who need it the most, while the richest Americans – including many of them – could financially benefit.”

Earlier this week, Senator Hawley promised again not to cut Medicaid, even saying President Trump promises that as well. That all, despite the fact that House Republicans signed off on the largest cuts to Medicaid in history – a bill Trump has endorsed already.

Numerous Republicans, from President Trump down, have said the bill will not gut Medicaid. That claim has been thoroughly debunked
