9.2 million constituents represented by the top 10 richest senators and 4 million constituents represented by the top 25 richest representatives rely on Medicaid

WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, House Republicans voted in favor of the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history, leaving over 14 million Americans at risk of losing health coverage, 3 million households without food assistance, and burdening millions with higher education and energy costs. As Republican Senators consider even deeper cuts, a new analysis from Accountable.US revealed today that of the top 35 richest congressional Republicans—worth $2.5 billion collectively—28 sit on key committees overseeing cuts, and all are able to take advantage of Trump-endorsed tax cuts aimed to benefit the wealthy.

The richest Republicans in Congress are happy to raise costs for millions of their own constituents and jeopardize healthcare for millions more, while they get a tax cut for themselves. The Trump tax scam is a grift for the ultra-rich, including those who are in charge of passing this legislation themselves, and a betrayal to hardworking Americans everywhere.

Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk.

Per the analysis:

  • 6.3 million constituents represented by the top 10 richest senators and 2.1 million constituents represented by the top 25 richest representatives use SNAP and are at risk of losing their food security.
  • 9.2 million constituents represented by the top 10 richest senators and 4 million constituents represented by the top 25 richest representatives use Medicaid and are at risk of losing critically needed healthcare.
  • 3 million and 930,000 federal student aid grants given to constituents within their states and districts, respectively, threatening to price students out of pursuing higher education.

Today’s findings are the latest in Accountable.US’ Cash in Congress project, which will continue to shed light on how congressional Republicans’ tax cuts will hurt everyday Americans by gutting programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and Head Start while enriching the wealthy few.
