Republican SNAP Cuts Threaten Tens of Millions Who Rely on the Program to Feed Their Families

Trump’s Tax Scam for Billionaires and Corporations Could Cut SNAP By Up to $230 Billion
WASHINGTON, DC — In pursuit of Trump’s agenda, House Republicans are fighting for a budget that would deprive millions of Americans of critical food aid benefits. Their campaign to gut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could threaten the ability of 40 million Americans to put food on their table—all to offset the cost of drastic tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations.
Congressional Republicans’ proposed cuts to SNAP are a betrayal of their promise to fight for the American people and lower their costs – and even worse, these cuts are all in service of paying off their tax cuts for the richest in the country. To plan to potentially cut $230 billion in nutrition assistance to a program 40 million Americans rely on is a damning admission: they are working on behalf of their billionaire donors, not the American people.”

Republicans’ budget plan could raise costs and threaten food security for millions of American families by:
- Removing millions from the program: About 1 in 8 people in the U.S., including 1 in 5 children rely on SNAP but the most extreme policy proposals coming from Republican lawmakers could “cut benefits for all” and remove millions from the program.
- Slashing the $$$ benefits available to feed families: Another proposal from the conservative Republican Study Committee pushes for drastic cuts that would lower the average $6.20 benefit to only $4.80.
- Blocking states from providing resources to their residents: Republican lawmakers would further restrict states’ rights to grant waivers for residents who live in areas without adequate employment opportunities and remove certain exemptions for those experiencing homelessness, veterans, and youth who have recently aged out of foster care, putting 1.1 million at risk of losing benefits.
Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar held a hearing highlighting the millions of Americans that stand to lose SNAP benefits under the Republican scam. Details for each Congressional district here.
