Republican Medicaid Cuts Will Bring Higher Costs, Worse Healthcare

Trump’s Tax Scam for Billionaires and Corporations Could Cut Medicaid By Up to $880 Billion
WASHINGTON, DC — With Trump’s blessing, House Republicans are pushing a budget that could require an unprecedented $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid, a program that more than 90 million Americans rely on for essential care. Their campaign to end Medicaid as we know it could have devastating consequences for rural hospitals, nursing homes, access to maternity care, and children’s and community-based services across the country.
All in service of cutting taxes for billionaires and large corporations, Republicans aren’t just accepting $880 billion in potential Medicaid budget cuts, they’re gleefully cheering them on.
Trump’s tax scam is his most overt betrayal of his promise to lower costs for Americans. To pay for tax cuts or the wealthiest people and corporations, more than 90 million Americans' healthcare will be put on the chopping block. Medicaid is a vital program millions of people rely on for life-saving healthcare, and without it, their medical bills will go up and their health will be needlessly put at risk. The $880 billion in potential Medicaid cuts represent an abdication in leadership by Trump and Congressional Republicans, who appear hell-bent on making life harder for hardworking Americans in service of their billionaire donors.”

Republicans’ budget plan could raise costs on millions of American families by:
- Immediately causing 3 million Americans to lose their Medicaid coverage: Current proposals to cut Medicaid could lead to nine states with “trigger” laws on the books to automatically eliminate plans if the federal funding fell below 90%, impacting at least three million adults.
- Jacking up health care premiums for 4 million Americans: Both RSC and House Budget Committee plans would ultimately raise premiums by ending tax credits put in place in 2021, hiking premiums by as much as 300% and putting 4 million people in jeopardy of losing coverage of the premium tax credit.
- Increasing millions of people’s state tax burden across 49 states: In addition to cutting federal funding for Medicaid and increasing the cost of healthcare for all 50 states, Republican lawmakers want to block states from raising funds by taxing insurers and healthcare providers. 49 states—all except Alaska—levy provider taxes. Removing the tax means states will be forced to fill the gap with higher resident taxes or by cutting programs.
Across the country, Members of Congress are participating in a Medicaid Day of Action to lift up the devastating impact Congressional Republicans’ proposed Medicaid cuts would have on the American people. Thousands of Americans in each Congressional district stand to lose coverage under the Republican scam. Find details for your hometown district here.
This Sunday is the anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, another key piece of legislation that has expanded healthcare access to Americans. Under Trump’s tax scam, this program could also see devastating cuts that would take away healthcare and jack up costs.
