REPORT: Speaker Johnson’s Anti-LGBTQ Activism Goes Back Decades
WASHINGTON, DC – Following today’s floor vote confirming Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the new Speaker of the House, government watchdog Accountable.US released a new report revealing further details of Johnson’s decades-long anti-LGBTQ advocacy.
Mike Johnson is a far-right extremist who led a desperate attempt to subvert democracy by overturning 2020 election results in key swing states, cheered radical abortion bans and introduced a national “Don’t Say Gay” bill, and boasts a voting record deeming him one of the most extreme members of the Republican conference. The extreme faction has always pulled the strings with House Republicans, and Speaker Johnson triples down on that,” said Accountable.US executive director Tony Carrk.
Report highlights:
- While working for the hate group Alliance Defending Freedom, now-Speaker Mike Johnson called the LGBTQ opposing counsel a derogatory anti-LGBTQ term while defending a ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage in the Louisiana constitution.
- Now-Speaker Mike Johnson defended Louisiana’s same-sex marriage ban before the state’s Supreme Court twice, and was even honored by the extremist Family Research Council for his efforts.
- Now-Speaker Mike Johnson defended an Alliance Defending Freedom-organized nationwide “Day of Truth,” calling gay rights “sinful” and “destructive.”

Earlier today, Accountable.US highlighted Speaker Johnson’s ties to the Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group Alliance Defending Freedom. Johnson previously served as the organization’s senior spokesperson and has clearly carried ADF’s key anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion priorities with him to Congress — he led the introduction of a national “Don’t Say Gay” bill and earned an A+ ranking from the far-right anti-abortion organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, which stated that he “has voted consistently to defend the lives of the unborn and infants,” including by “stopping hard-earned tax dollars from paying for abortion.”
