A new PBS NewsHour segment highlights Accountable.US research detailing Project 2025’s draconian health care agenda, authored by former Trump staffer and current Heritage senior staffer Roger Severino. The agenda, laid out in Project 2025’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) chapter of its lengthy policy manifesto, includes plans to ban abortion, end Medicare negotiations, weaken government authority, and enable discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.

Roger Severino’s track record as former director of the Office of Civil Rights at HHS in the Trump administration speaks volumes about the far-right agenda he seeks to impose. Severino’s tenure was marked by relentless efforts to roll back hard-won reproductive and LGBTQ rights, aligning with his pre-Heritage career at Becket and matching Project 2025’s broader goals.

While at HHS, Severino worked to exclude abortion from health care coverage, issued a rule allowing employers to refuse to cover birth control in their employee health insurance plans, and stripped nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans. A Severino-led HHS would go even further to effectively ban abortion nationwide, gut the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and enable even more anti-LGBTQ discrimination.
