New Report Exposes Election Deniers Behind House Republican Effort To Make It Harder To Vote
As House Speaker Johnson pushes a stop-gap funding measure including a bill aimed at making it harder to vote, Accountable.US released a new report revealing that the Only Citizens Vote Coalition, a right-wing group backed by election deniers and MAGA conservative activists like Cleta Mitchell, is peddling misinformation and conspiracy theories to sow doubt in the 2024 election.
The research highlights how the group, whose members have a history of contesting election results, have made noncitizen voting in federal elections a focal point—in legislation such as the SAVE Act—despite the fact this is an exceedingly rare occurrence and already prohibited by law. Many partners are linked to the efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, including groups that have perpetuated false claims of widespread voter fraud.
MAGA right-wing groups and their congressional allies are trying to sow doubt in our elections. This legislation is a deliberate attempt to create a pretext for undermining the results of the 2024 election. The real danger here is making it harder to vote legally and the erosion of trust in our electoral system. ”
Caroline Ciccone, President of Accountable.US
Key Findings from the Research:
- SAVE Act Tied to Election Deniers: The Only Citizens Vote Coalition is composed of organizations that played significant roles in the 2020 election challenges or have promoted election denialism in the years since, including groups like the Election Integrity Network and America First Legal. These groups are now pushing the SAVE Act under the guise of election integrity.
- Potential for 2024 Election Challenges: By framing noncitizen voting as a threat, the coalition is setting the stage for potential challenges to the results of the 2024 election, similar to efforts made in 2020. Several coalition partners have already expressed doubts about the legitimacy of future elections.
- Use of Judge Shopping: The research reveals that many of the coalition’s lawsuits, including the one tied to the SAVE Act, have been filed in judicial districts known for “judge shopping,” where favorable rulings can be expected from sympathetic judges.
- Dark Money Ties: The coalition’s key players are linked to Leonard Leo’s dark money network, which has funded efforts to influence the judiciary and push for restrictive voting laws. Groups like the Public Interest Legal Foundation and Foundation for Government Accountability are deeply embedded in this network.
- Undermining Voter Confidence: The SAVE Act, while presented as a voter integrity measure, could disenfranchise vulnerable populations by requiring proof of citizenship, a move critics argue is designed to suppress turnout among certain demographics.

The research underscores the broader implications of the SAVE Act and the coalition’s efforts. If successful, these measures could lead to a repeat of the 2020 election crisis, with widespread efforts to delegitimize and challenge the results of the 2024 election. The coalition’s ties to dark money and election denial further raise concerns about the true motives behind the SAVE Act.
