Biden’s commemoration of Indian boarding school demonstrates the value of Antiquities Act, which has fallen under the crosshairs of Project 2025

WASHINGTON, DC — President Joe Biden yesterday designated the former Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School in Pennsylvania a national monument, seeking to recognize the injustice perpetrated by the federal government against American Indian children for over 150 years. The schools were the site of rampant abuse against native children, resulting in hundreds of deaths and deep generational trauma.

This is exactly what the Antiquities Act is for: Recognizing our history and reaffirming our core values as Americans. Whether it’s conserving iconic landscapes or expressing our deeply held national sentiments, the Act is essential to defining what it means to be an American. President Trump should ignore calls to undo the act, which would only cause further division and discord.”

The Antiquities Act is targeted for repeal by the controversial far-right Project 2025 initiative. William Perry Pendley, who served in the first Trump administration and authored the Department of Interior section of the blueprint, has called for national monuments to be reversed, and even for public lands to be sold off to the highest bidder.

In his first term, Trump reversed the popular Bears Ears National Monument, sparking outcry from native communities across the Southwest. President Biden has designated 6 national monuments, with calls mounting for him to add to the tally in California, North Dakota and elsewhere.
