Hawley is once again threatening national security, this time by obstructing a swift confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas, President Biden’s pick for Secretary of Homeland Security

The ongoing health, economic, and cyber security crises, in addition to the ongoing threats of extremism, demand the new administration’s full attention or risk the safety of the American people

Washington, D.C.The Accountable Senate War Room released a new digital ad calling Senator Josh Hawley out for his role in the violent riot on January 6th and the further risks to national security by the delays he caused to the confirmation of President Biden’s pick for Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. On the heels of undermining a democratically-held election by alleging widespread voter fraud with no evidence, and encouraging a deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol – and democracy itself – Accountable Senate War Room will continue to remind Hawley’s constituents that his actions threaten the safety of the American people. The five-figure buy launched over the weekend and is running in Missouri and D.C.

“Senator Hawley encouraged an act of violence on our U.S. Capitol that resulted in multiple deaths and caused irrevocable damage to the foundational idea of free and fair elections,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for Accountable Senate War Room. “Now he has the gall to hold up the confirmation of the head of the very department in charge of national security. His actions continue to put our country’s safety at risk, and Hawley needs to be held accountable for jeopardizing American lives.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to mass sickness, death, and unemployment bound to take our country years to recover from. The recent violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol threatened the very idea of democracy itself, and according to a rare national terrorism warning by the Department of Homeland Security last week, the aftermath suggests the United States “will face heightened threats from violent extremists emboldened by the assault on the Capitol for weeks.” And, described as the “worst cyberespionage failure to date,” the U.S. government was recently hacked by Russia, only adding to the growing threats to cyber security. It is imperative that President Biden and his Cabinet are able to address the growing threats to national security as soon as possible. And yet, Hawley voted against every single one of President Biden’s national security picks so far.

The DHS nominees for both President Obama and President Trump were confirmed on day one of their administration, in line with our country’s prioritization of national security. Yet, almost two weeks into the Biden administration, the country is still waiting for his candidates for top national security roles to be confirmed by the Senate. To adequately tackle the many crises our country is facing, the Biden administration needs to have its full national security team in place as soon as possible, and a self-serving United States senator shouldn’t be standing in the way of that.
