Yesterday, new reporting in The Guardian exposed Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts’ central role in the organization’s far-right shift with its MAGA manifesto Project 2025

As The Guardian notes, Roberts praised and cultivated close ties with authoritarian international leaders like Hungary’s far-right prime minister Viktor Orbán, calling his regimethe model” for “conservative statecraft,” while Heritage itself has been accused of being “conquered” by Orbánist influence.

The piece also highlighted Roberts’ career before Heritage, which was marked by controversy. This includes his tenure at Wyoming Catholic College, where he refused federal funding to preserve the ability to discriminate against LGBTQ+ students and staff, as well as his time leading the Texas Public Policy Foundation, which – Accountable.US research notes – deceptively avoided paying upwards of $3 million in property taxes under his leadership.

Accountable.US findings also show that, since taking the helm in 2021, Roberts has prioritized combating so-called “woke” education, peddled harmful anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, and spread dangerous election denial conspiracy theories. Most alarmingly, under Roberts, Heritage became the driving force of Project 2025 – the $22 million MAGA blueprint explicitly seeking to “destroy” the administrative state.

They’re proudly proclaiming, here’s what we’ll do, here’s how we’re going to do it. And I think when people tell you who they are, we should believe them.”
