 A new tax filing offers a rare peek into how far-right judicial activist Leonard Leo continues to deploy his $1.6 billion windfall.  Central to his network of shadowy nonprofits, Leo’s Marble Freedom Trust is increasing funding to his favorite causes. The Trust’s 990 form provides new details about Leo’s priorities, including his continued assault on reproductive freedom and the administrative state.

Key findings from the new 990:

  • Marble Freedom Trust increased its grantmaking by more than $34 million between 2021 and 2022.
  • Marble Freedom Trust nearly doubled its contributions to Leo’s Concord Fund, which funneled over $3.7 million into Leo’s for-profit CRC Advisors — continuing Leo’s circular payment scheme.
  • Marble Freedom Trust dumped millions into groups fueling the anti-abortion movement including $7.6 million to the extreme anti-abortion group Knights of Columbus Charitable Fund, which bankrolls deceptive crisis pregnancy centers. The Knights of Columbus Charitable Fund then gave to the far-right legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, which brought and backed Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, the landmark abortion pill challenge heard by the Supreme Court earlier this week.
