The list outlines more than a dozen ways Republicans could slash healthcare for millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, DC – As congressional Republicans debate how to cut $880 billion from Medicaid funding to pay for their tax cuts for themselves, billionaire donors, and corporations, new Axios reporting revealed yesterday the long list of programs Energy and Commerce committee Republicans are willing to gut.

The list outlines more than a dozen ways Republicans could slash healthcare for tens of millions of Americans—confirming once again that Republican lawmakers are no longer pretending to care about healthcare for their constituents.

The top of the list includes:

    • Lowering the federal government’s share of a state’s Medicaid spending—likely pushing the cost of Medicaid onto the states and threatening immediate loss of coverage for millions of Americans.
    • Placing so-called “per capita caps” on states that have expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, once again making it more difficult for millions of low-income Americans to access coverage.
    • Blocking states from raising funds by taxing insurers and healthcare providers. 49 states—all except Alaska—levy provider taxes. Removing the tax means states will be forced to fill the gap with higher resident taxes or by cutting programs.

Millions of children, families, and older Americans rely on Medicaid for access to critical medical care, including Energy and Commerce members’ constituents across the country.
