Washington, D.C. — In his latest attempt to undermine democracy, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has opened an investigation into the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for failing to comply with subpoenas related to the sham election audit issued by the Republican-controlled state Senate, Insider reports.

“Mark Brnovich is willing to do absolutely anything to help twice-impeached former president Trump further the Big Lie and stroke his ego, even if it means abusing his power as attorney general to overturn the will of the public,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “The more taxpayer dollars Brnovich wastes with these frivolous lawsuits and investigations based on nothing but sad internet conspiracies, the more damage he causes to our democracy along the way.”

Brnovich’s investigation into the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is the latest act in the election circus in Arizona. Earlier this year, the Republican-controlled state Senate conducted an ‘audit’ of the county that President Biden won by over 45,000 votes, filled with false allegations and overall incompetence that garnered national attention for its absurdity, even from top Republicans in the state and the Department of Justice

These ‘audits,’ disguised as normal checks on our election systems, are actually designed to undermine our election integrity and make it harder for Americans to cast their ballot in future elections. As state houses across the country gear up to make it harder to vote, Mark Brnovich is no stranger to voter suppression efforts. In 2019, after he was given $530,000 in taxpayer money to establish an “Election Integrity Unit.” Brnovich staffed the new unit with the chairwoman of “Verify the Vote Arizona,” an organization associated with “True the Vote,” which has been accused of voter suppression. In 2020, Brnovich supported Arizona Republican state senators’ overreaching subpoena of Maricopa County voting records, even after an election audit found no evidence of irregularities

Accountable.US launched “Enemies of Progress,” an effort to hold conservative attorneys general across the country accountable for preventing progress on key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all in service to their campaign donors.
