Today, nonprofit watchdog Accountable.US applauded the launch of the Stop Project 2025 Task Force, led by Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA) and founded alongside other progressive leaders in Congress. Accountable.US is supporting the new working group, which aims to counter the Heritage Foundation’s authoritarian blueprint for a potential future MAGA administration.

Project 2025 threatens to undermine American democracy by dismantling institutions, abolishing many checks and balances, and consolidating power within the executive branch to carry out radical policies that are not supported by everyday Americans. Thankfully, we have progressive leaders stepping up to stop this authoritarian power grab threatening our rights and freedoms. We’re grateful for Rep. Huffman and the other founding members of the Stop Project 2025 Task Force for their efforts to prevent Project 2025 from becoming a reality and protect democracy as we know it.”

Accountable.US president Caroline Ciccone

Project 2025 is more than an idea, it's a dystopian plot that’s already in motion to dismantle our democratic institutions, abolish checks and balances, chip away at church-state separation, and impose a far-right agenda that infringes on basic liberties and violates public will. This is an unprecedented embrace of extremism, fascism, and religious nationalism, orchestrated by the radical right and its dark money backers. We need a coordinated strategy to save America and stop this coup before it’s too late. Through this Task Force, leaders across the ideological spectrum and experts in every policy area that’s under attack are uniting to protect democracy as we know it.”

Rep. Jared Huffman

The Task Force will serve as a central hub for progressive leaders in Congress, civil society, and affected communities to coordinate on examining, highlighting, preempting, and counteracting Project 2025 – a roadmap developed by the Heritage Foundation that outlines strategies to consolidate executive branch power, purge federal workers, erode checks and balances, and swiftly enact controversial policies opposed by most Americans.

As The Hill notes, “the idea was conceived, [Representative] Huffman said, after members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) were briefed by several liberal advocacy groups on the specifics of Project 2025,” including Accountable.US.

Members of the Task Force represent the diversity of the Democratic Caucus and are leaders on many of the issues currently under attack by Project 2025. Founding members joining Rep. Huffman are Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Ted Lieu (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Nanette Barragán (D-CA), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair Judy Chu (D-CA), Equality Caucus and Labor Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (D-WI), Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chair Diana DeGette (D-CO), Co-Chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus and Ranking Member of Oversight Jamie Raskin (D-MD), and Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-WA).

Accountable.US launched its Expose Project 2025 campaign to uncover the sprawling dark money network, key funders, and conservative figures behind the extreme Project 2025 effort threatening our democracy. Learn more at ExposeProject2025.org.
