New reporting from Bloomberg revealed Larry Ellison, right-wing mega-donor and election denier, will control CBS News after the completion of a merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global valued at $8 billion. In addition to CBS News, Paramount Global owns other household media names such as MTV and Nickelodeon.

A far-right billionaire with a track record of bankrolling election-denying candidates and campaign strategies will control one of the public’s most trusted news sources. Our democracy depends on a fair and impartial press. With Ellison’s background in right-wing influence peddling and backing those who tried to undermine our democracy through an insurrection, the threat of Ellison at the helm of such an influential institution is clear.”

As a major investor in right-wing politics, Ellison gave over $35 million to the Super PAC Opportunity Matters, which in turn spent millions to help elect four extreme election-denying candidates. In addition to donating to election-denier causes, Ellison personally participated in a strategy call with election conspiracy organization True the Vote to plot ways to overturn the results of the 2020 election. 

This is not Ellison’s first foray into news media investing. Ellison reportedly invested $1 billion in Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, calling the platform — which under Musk’s ownership has turned into a hub for misinformation and election denialism — a “real-time news service” that is “important for a democracy.”
