Healthcare, Affordable Groceries, and More on the Chopping Block to Pay for Tax Cuts that Benefit a Decisive Majority of Congressional Republicans

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the House Ways & Means, Agriculture, and Energy & Commerce committees will markup hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to programs that provide healthcare and food to hardworking, everyday Americans like Medicaid and SNAP. These cuts are intended to offset the trillions of dollars in tax cuts congressional Republicans are eager to pass for the ultra-rich and corporations – cuts that more than 70% of congressional Republicans stand to benefit from, according to Accountable.US’ database cashincongress.org.

Try as they may, congressional Republicans can't outrun the truth exposed in this week’s markups: they’re slashing billions from programs that millions of everyday Americans rely on all in service of lowering taxes for the richest in our country. A decisive majority of congressional Republicans will personally profit from these cuts, while the programs that keep healthcare accessible and daily costs manageable for working families are being gutted. It’s not just reckless — it’s a complete betrayal of their commitment to make life better for Americans.”

Accountable.US Executive Director Tony Carrk.

Republicans cash in while their constituents struggle: While Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) could benefit from the extension of the pass-through deduction after reporting at least $200,000 in potential pass-through rental income, 216,000 of his constituents rely on Medicaid for access to life-saving healthcare.

And Energy & Commerce Chairman Brett Guthrie, whose assets exceed $7 million, could benefit from dismantling the estate tax while his committee exceeds their expected cuts and threaten Medicaid access for 234,000 of his own constituents.
