Trump, Congressional Republicans’ Tax Plan Will Take Away Healthcare, Increase Costs for Millions of Americans

Four Million Americans’ Healthcare On the Line to Pay for Billionaire Tax Cuts
WASHINGTON, DC — To pay for tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, the Trump-endorsed Congressional Republican tax bill would also sunset the Affordable Care Act premiums in place that expand healthcare for Americans and lower costs for even more.
In 2024, a record 21.3 million Americans signed up for health coverage through the ACA Marketplaces. The Inflation Reduction Act’s ACA premiums for people who buy their own coverage saved an average of $2,400 a year per family.
These cost-saving measures that tens of millions of Americans rely on expire at the end of the year—a reality Trump and Congressional Republicans endorse to pay for their tax cuts for the richest. According to Kaiser, “If the Inflation Reduction Act’s enhanced subsidies were to expire at the end of next year, the vast majority of ACA Marketplace enrollees would see significant increases in their premium payments.” Here are the stakes:
- Both the Republican Study Committee and House Budget Committee Republicans’ plans would ultimately raise premiums by ending Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits put in place in 2021, hiking premiums by as much as 300%.
- In at least 12 states, enrollees would see their annual premium payments double or more, on average. The states that will see costs increase the most—Alaska, Wyoming, and West Virginia—have Republican Senators.
- Ending these credits would put close to 4 million people in jeopardy of losing coverage of the premium tax credit, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Jacking up costs and ripping away healthcare from those that need it most—all to pay for tax cuts for the richest in America—betrays every Congressional Republican and Trump’s campaign promises to lower costs for their constituents. These devastating cuts come in tandem with a historic $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid. The cumulative 100 million or more Americans that would be impacted by Trump and Congressional Republicans’ assault on their healthcare deserve an answer: why are billionaires getting a tax break on the backs of everyday Americans?”
