REMINDER: Any Version of Republicans’ Budget Betrayal Guts Healthcare for Millions

Congressional Republicans Who’ve Vowed to Protect Medicaid Know This
NEW REPORT: At least 8 Senate Republicans have been outspoken against potential cuts to Medicaid, 6 stand to line their pockets if they go back on their word
WASHINGTON, DC – The back-and-forth in Congress on the budget reconciliation bill to give tax cuts to themselves and billionaire donors in many ways falls down the question of Medicaid cuts. And while some congressional Republicans may want to promise they’ll protect Medicaid, the reality is that every version of the Republicans’ bill cannot pay for their big tax scam without gutting Medicaid for millions.
A stark reminder: the House-passed version of the bill guts healthcare for at least 16 million to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-rich.
The congressional Republicans concerned about Medicaid could be decisive in blocking these cuts to Medicaid, but should the bill pass—which requires their support—these members could also stand to financially benefit. A new report from Accountable.US revealed today that six of the eight Republican senators who have been outspoken about the impact of Medicaid cuts stand to personally benefit from tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans while their constituents face the severe consequences of drastic healthcare reductions.
Per the analysis, Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO), Eric Schmitt (R-MO), Jon Husted (R-OH), Ted Budd (R-NC), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Jim Justice (R-WV) would likely benefit from extending and expanding the pass-through deduction. These senators collectively represent more than 704,000 Americans who could lose access to critical medical care like prescription refills and doctor visits as a result of Medicaid cuts.
No matter how you spin it, you can’t hide from the fact that any version of Republicans’ reconciliation bill will gut healthcare for millions of hardworking Americans. The congressional Republicans who’ve voiced their concerns about Medicaid cuts know the truth: if the Republican-led Congress passes tax cuts for themselves and the ultra-rich, then their constituents’ will lose healthcare, and many will lose their lives.”

Senate Republicans know how devastating Medicaid cuts will be for their constituents. Earlier this week, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) shared a flyer explaining how 10 states stand to “lose the most amount of federal Medicaid funding over the next decade.” Tillis’ own North Carolina will forfeit $38.9 billion under the Republican tax scam.
Today’s findings are the latest in Accountable.US’ Cash in Congress project which will continue to shed light on how congressional Republicans’ Big, Beautiful Betrayal will hurt everyday Americans by gutting programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and Head Start while enriching the wealthy few.
