Today, new reporting in The Guardian highlighted tax filings obtained by Accountable.US that uncover a direct financial link between far-right judicial activist Leonard Leo’s billion-dollar network and Consumers Defense, which championed vile attacks on transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney and the subsequent Bud Light boycott. This revelation sheds new light on the right-wing forces behind the controversial campaign.

Recent tax filings reveal that The Concord Fund – a key entity in Leo’s network – contributed $350,000 to Consumers Defense, the new lobbying arm of “anti-ESG” group Consumers’ Research. These organizations were at the forefront of the Bud Light boycott and subsequent attacks on transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney following the brand’s collaboration with her. This contribution follows a previous $6 million donation to Consumers’ Research from DonorsTrust – another pivotal group in Leo’s network – which enabled its revenue to surge from $835,000 to over $8 million in 2021.

Just two weeks after Mulvaney’s Bud Light ad debuted, Consumers’ Research launched its “Woke Alerts” campaign, explicitly targeting the beer brand and claiming to play an “integral role” in the ensuing backlash. The boycott led to death threats and harassment targeting Mulvaney, violent incidents against Bud Light consumers, and 350 Anheuser-Busch employee layoffs.

These findings, coupled with recent research exposing Leo’s connections to the anti-trans organization Do No Harm, paint a clearer picture of Leo’s expanded priorities beyond just the judiciary as he works to force a wildly unpopular and extreme agenda on Americans everywhere.
