WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, the MAGA House majority passed its top legislative priority: H.R. 1, also known as the Polluters Over People Act. The legislation would gut environmental review, give more public land away to private oil and mining interests, and ban a pause on dangerous and potentially hazardous extractive activities like fracking and mining, while also debilitating enforcement mechanisms. In response, Accountable.US released the following statement:

Today’s vote is the latest example of the House GOP prioritizing the profits of polluters over the health and safety of communities and future generations, all while doing nothing to lower energy costs for consumers. Even after Big Oil brought in over $400 billion in profit last year, their allies in Congress are racing to stuff their pockets with more giveaways at the public’s expense. It’s hard to overstate the catastrophic impact H.R. 1 would have on our public lands and our ability to address the most severe effects of the climate crisis. We applaud both the Senate Majority Leader and President Biden for their pledges to stop this disastrous bill from ever becoming law.”

Earlier this week, Accountable.US released the following analysis outlining eight key factors that expose H.R. 1’s erroneous justifications and harmful potential impact.
