Ahead of today’s House Administration Committee hearing, government watchdog Accountable.US released new reports exposing MAGA House Republicans’ key witnesses as fringe extremists.

From J. Christian Adams of the Public Interest Legal Foundation and Caitlin Sutherland of Americans for Public Trust to Hans von Spakovsky and Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd, these witnesses have a striking similarity: their penchant for trafficking in conspiracy theories, baseless 2020 election claims, and other misinformation.

In their ongoing attack on American democracy, MAGA House Republicans continue to platform conspiracy theorists and election deniers instead of prioritizing issues that matter to everyday Americans. Today’s hearing is just the latest act in a political circus designed to distract from their own unpopular agenda and lack of meaningful accomplishments.”

The Accountable.US reports reveal the radical extremism of key witnesses at today’s hearing:

  • Public Interest Legal Foundation’s J. Christian Adams: Led by Adams, the Public Interest Legal Foundation is a right-wing group aimed at purging voter rolls by suing state and local governments, often based on false, miscalculated, or inaccurate claims of voter and election fraud. Since the Capitol Insurrection, the group has promoted unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen, led efforts to roll back voting rights, and trained a legion of activists to harass local election officials and disrupt elections. • Americans for Public Trust’s Caitlin Sutherland: Led by Sutherland, Americans for Public Trust has been subject to an Internal Revenue Service complaint challenging its tax-exempt status for spreading “unsupported and misleading’ political attack ads” in potential violation of IRS rules that prohibit the group from engaging in political activity. The group once featured outside counsel who was a “close ally” of former President Trump and “spearheaded” his failed legal challenges alleging voter fraud in the 2020 election. More Information: Monitoring Influence
  • Heritage Foundation’s Hans von Spakovsky: Authored Project 2025’s playbook on the FEC, Spakovsky has also provided a slew of recommendations intended to neuter the bipartisan independent agency and redirect power to DOJ political appointees. He uses his post at the Heritage Foundation to push right-wing and election/voter fraud conspiracy theories and advocate for laws that limit voting access. More Information: Monitoring Influence
  • Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd: A former right-wing state legislator, he has refused to acknowledge Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory, espouses QAnon beliefs, and is married to a public backer of the Proud Boys, Moms For Liberty, and the January 6 Capitol Insurrection.
