Washington D.C. – Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its next hearing for President Donald Trump’s latest slate of judicial nominations. All of Trump’s nominees hold dangerous records of undermining Americans’ fundamental freedoms, and today, Accountable.US is releasing a new research report spotlighting the alarming records of two nominees for judgeships in Florida who have targeted reproductive freedom. Today’s report follows a previous Accountable.US investigation which showed the extreme anti-choice record of Trump’s Missouri judicial nominees.

“In Trump’s first term, the President, his allies in Congress, and far right special interests teamed up to capture the courts and took unprecedented steps to roll back Americans’ fundamental freedoms. This time around, Trump is taking his crusade even further by pushing nominees who are loyal to the President above all else, and will see out his ideological agenda to reshape American life,” said Accountable.US President Caroline Ciccone. “The extreme and unqualified nominees testifying tomorrow already have clear records of limiting Americans’ ability to make their own health care decisions. How far will they go if they are confirmed?”

  • Jordan E. Pratt, nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida: Last month, Jordan E. Pratt, a Florida appeals judge appointed by Ron DeSantis, penned a ruling striking down a Florida law that assured minors the right to obtain abortions without their parents’ consent. Pratt also worked as senior counsel for the First Liberty Institute, a far-right Christian law group from which multiple Trump judicial nominees have now sprung. They include activist judges Matthew J. Kacsmaryk and James Ho, who wrote parallel opinions in the recent mifepristone case at the district and appellate levels. While at First Liberty, Pratt was the lead attorney on an amicus brief filed in support of upholding Florida’s 15 week abortion ban, in which the authors lamented the legality of “the barbaric practice of abortion.”
  • John Guard, nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida: John Guard previously had a brief stint as acting attorney general under Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and defended Florida’s abortion ban in court as Florida’s chief deputy attorney general. In the case, Guard’s team called in as witnesses anti-abortion activists affiliated with the Charlotte Lozier Institute, which has been linked to junk science studies used to push misinformative narratives about abortion safety.
