Watchdog: Trump Pardon of Violent January 6 Rioters Signals “Law and Order” Doesn’t Apply to Trump Loyalists

Washington D.C. – After President Trump “pardoned, commuted the prison sentences or vowed to dismiss the cases of all of the 1,500-plus people charged with crimes in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, including people convicted of assaulting police officers” on his first day in office, government watchdog Accountable.US released the following statement:
“Rather than get to work lowering costs for working families as promised, one of President Trump’s first acts was to dole out pardons to violent insurrectionists who beat up cops, vandalized and looted taxpayer property, brought weapons and zip ties for lawmakers, and even waved the Confederate flag inside the U.S. Capitol. Trump claimed he’d be a “law and order” President but left out the part about allowing two systems of justice where one doesn’t apply to loyalists willing to do anything for him – including break the law. How does it make anyone safer by undermining our justice system and treating rioters who mobbed police officers and desecrated our democracy like heroes? Working Americans who were hoping for a President focused on their needs will clearly have to wait while Trump settles his personal political grievances and takes care of his cronies first.”
