Senator John Cornyn smears Vanita Gupta as “the most dangerous” nominee to the Department of Justice

Accountable Senate War Room: “What you’re seeing here is a rattled Cornyn launching a bad-faith attack in an attempt to hamstring the Department responsible for investigating a deadly insurrection the Senator’s own party helped incite.”

Washington, D.C. – Today, Accountable Senate War Room released the following response to Senator John Cornyn’s vitriolic statement smearing Vanita Gupta, President Biden’s qualified nominee for associate attorney general, as “the most dangerous nominee to the Department of Justice.”

“Senator Cornyn’s choice to invoke ‘dangerous’ when describing yet another qualified Cabinet nominee of color is equal parts abhorrent and unsurprising,” said Mairead Lynn, spokesperson for Accountable Senate War Room. “This latest smear joins an unsettling chorus of pointed attacks meant to shake support for these qualified nominees – but, in reality, this name calling is nothing more than a flimsy attempt to protect the attacker’s interests. In this case? It’s a rattled Cornyn launching a bad-faith attack in an attempt to hamstring the Department responsible for investigating a deadly insurrection the Senator’s own party helped incite.”

This trend of vitriol towards Biden’s Cabinet nominees of color and women Cabinet nominees of color has only metastasized throughout the confirmation process.

Take a look at Accountable Senate War Room’s analysis of this pointed language that some have called a dog whistle with racial undertones:
