Operation Warp Speed’s Incompetence Leaves Biden Admin with Major Messes to Clean Up

Washington, DC — Today, Accountable Pharma released the following statement on new reports that the Biden administration is considering expanding the use of the Defense Production Act to call on drug manufacturers not making COVID vaccines to produce Pfizer’s or Moderna’s vaccines. This comes after the Trump administration spent months failing to enact the Defense Production Act to expand vaccine supply or compel the pharmaceutical industry to produce the medications needed for critically-ill COVID-19 ventilator patients and meaningfully distribute supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile to areas in need.

“President Biden cannot wait a second longer; he must use his authority to get millions more vaccines into the arms of struggling Americans,” said Eli Zupnick, spokesman for Accountable Pharma. “President Trump sat back and watched as more states called for additional vaccines and federal support. He failed to do everything in his power to provide much-needed resources to hospitals in response to this pandemic and the Biden administration can’t afford to make that same mistake.”

Accountable Pharma has been scrutinizing Operation Warp Speed and the Trump administration’s inadequate response to this crisis since the start. This month, we announced the filing of a Freedom of Information Act request to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) regarding any correspondence surrounding the announcement by Secretary Alex Azar that a “reserve” of vaccine doses would released to the states. We’ve also called out drug company insiders for dumping stocks after big announcements involving government funding. And we’ve laid out some of what we think the Biden administration should do to fix where the prior administration went wrong.
