Watchdog Calls for Investigation Following Violent Insurrection at Capitol Building
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to events at the Capitol today, government watchdog Accountable.US released the following statement on behalf of its president, Kyle Herrig:
“Today, President Donald Trump incited a mob that overtook the U.S. Capitol building and momentarily disrupted our elected leaders fulfilling their duty to certify the will of the people in the 2020 presidential election. These actions have been rightly condemned as insurrectionist and borderline seditious. But condemnation is not enough, and accountability in this crucial moment is paramount. Congress — or if it is unable or unwilling to rise to the task, an independent governing body — must fully investigate how these disturbing events came to pass; how it was possible that a small faction of people was able to enter the U.S. Capitol essentially unimpeded; and why it took so long for law enforcement to restore order. These events were chilling, and we stand with lawmakers and the American public in demanding answers.”
