Under Vought, Everyday Americans Will Pay the Price for Trump Tax Scam

WASHINGTON, DC — Trump’s choice to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Russ Vought, is a plain reminder that Republicans have no plan to fund their tax giveaways to the wealthy and corporations, except by turning their back on everyday Americans.
Throughout the confirmation process, Vought has failed to answer for the Trump administration’s plans to slash funding for Medicare and Social Security. Coupled with a laundry list of cuts to essential programs for Americans—such as clean energy, nutrition assistance, and healthcare programs—floated by Republican lawmakers, it’s clear that Republicans are setting up a tax code that only benefits the President, his billionaire donors, and their big business interests.
The Trump administration has long forgotten campaign promises to lower costs for working Americans, and is instead embracing Project 2025 and architects like Russ Vought. The devastating reality of Republican leadership in Washington is becoming increasingly clear: with no plan to pay for their tax scam, Vought and his Republican colleagues will gladly cut the programs that matter most to working Americans, all to benefit Trump’s billionaire donors.”

Vought had a long history of pushing cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and other major federal programs. During his time at Trump’s OMB, Vought helped oversee numerous budget proposals that would have significantly cut Medicare and Social Security over a ten-year period. As an architect of Project 2025, Vought authored a key chapter on reforming the Executive Office of the President, where he urged “fearless” challenges to settle legal precedents and expand political control of civil servants.
Here’s what Vought and Republican lawmakers propose cutting to fund their tax scam:
- Reduce Medicare and Medicaid spending: Congressional Republicans have a slew of options when it comes to slashing funding for healthcare for millions of Americans, including limiting federal health benefits and rewriting payment programs.
- Repeal clean energy tax credits: By undercutting key provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, Republicans are selling out the environment for a quick payout to big businesses.
- Decrease nutrition program benefits: Between added work requirements and rollbacks to President Biden’s SNAP expansion, Republicans are looking to make it more difficult for Americans to access nutrition assistance.
