Trump & Musk’s DOGE: Slashing Benefits, Enriching Themselves

Trump-Musk Administration’s DOGE Focused on Gutting Americans’ Essential Benefits, While Making Themselves Richer
Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continued its reckless crusade of skirting checks and balances and taking a machete to essential benefits from housing to health care to veterans’ services while Trump, Elon Musk, and their cronies use the federal government to generate profits for themselves.
New details have come to light showing that numerous DOGE and top Trump Administration aides are facing potential conflicts of interest as they lobby on behalf of corporate clients and enrich themselves while simultaneously directing DOGE’s cuts to benefits that everyday Americans depend on. That’s on top of the at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, and subsidies that has been funneled to Elon Musk’s business over the past two decades, helping make him the most wealthy man in the world. New details have also come to light on Musk’s latest ploy to leverage the federal government to benefit himself – as the FAA is reportedly eyeing diverting billions of dollars to benefit his company.
Americans deserve real reform to root out wasteful federal spending, cut red tape and bureaucracy, and make the government run better. Instead, DOGE is putting a for sale sign on the federal government, dramatically overstating the dollars being saved, and everyday Americans are being left to pay the price with climbing costs.
HOW THE TRUMP-MUSK ADMINISTRATION’S DOGE IS HARMING FAMILIES
- Sabotaging services for more than 9 million veterans: Donald Trump and Elon Musk fired more than 2,400 VA employees, raising concerns that veterans’ health care and benefits could be degraded. A Virginia VA pharmacist said that “the freeze could affect whether a new VA clinic in Chesapeake, Virginia, can open in April as planned.”
- Driving up housing costs by slashing the Department of Housing and Urban Development: Trump and Musk’s DOGE is reportedly planning to cut more than half of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s workforce which is expected to “upend housing markets, make homes less affordable and roil mortgage transactions” while Americans already face a national housing affordability crisis.
- Undermining public health amidst bird flu outbreak and rising egg prices: The Trump Administration reportedly accidentally fired several USDA employees who were working on combating the H5N1 avian flu outbreak which is driving increased egg prices for families. As one veterinary researcher noted, the firings are “creating a lot of problems.”
- Firing hundreds of aviation safety workers in the wake of the tragedy at Ronald Reagan airport: Despite repeated warnings of being understaffed for years, Trump and Musk fired all the members of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee and hundreds more FAA employees responsible for keeping Americans safe, just weeks after the tragic plane crash in Washington, DC. As one fired FAA employee put it, “This is about protecting national security, and I’m scared to death […] the American public should be scared too.”
- Threatening our national security by gutting hundreds overseeing our nuclear stockpile: Over 300 employees at the National Nuclear Security Administration responsible for ensuring our nuclear stockpile is safe and secure were fired – before the Trump Administration reversed course, attempted to rehire them, and then struggled to reach the former employees. A nuclear power expert has noted that the firings “can only benefit the adversaries of this country.”
- Gutting hundreds of FEMA employees, hindering our ability to respond to natural disasters: The Administration fired over 200 emergency management employees, making the agency which is responsible for responding to natural disasters like wildfires, hurricanes, and floods more vulnerable. The cuts come amid an existing staffing shortfall and increasingly frequent large scale disasters.
- Firing National Park Service employees ahead of summer travel season: DOGE fired over 1,000 National Park Service employees who play a critical role in preserving and keeping clean parks and campsites for Americans to enjoy. “Fewer staff means shorter visitor center hours, delayed openings and closed campgrounds” coming ahead of this year’s summer travel season.
- Axing thousands of PEPFAR workers focused on combatting and ending the AIDS epidemic: PEPFAR, the bipartisan program established to eradicate HIV/AIDS, has saved more than 26 million lives by investing in and increasing access to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment – making Americans safer by managing a global public health threat. Now it’s under threat after the Administration fired thousands of health workers, causing “panic, fear and confusion.”
