Senate Republicans Are Making You Pay for Tax Cuts for Billionaires. Will the House Do the Same–Again?

Senate Republicans had the chance to defend their constituents’ access to healthcare and food
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senate Republicans voted in favor of a tax and budget scheme that will kick 17 million of Americans off of their insurance, leave 4 million children without access to nutrition assistance, and drive up costs on everything from energy to education while issuing massive tax breaks to themselves, their billionaire donors and large corporations. Senate Republicans continually voted against dozens of amendments from Senate Democrats aimed at saving healthcare and food for kids.
Now, the same House Republicans who have spoken out against historic Medicaid cuts have another opportunity to stay true to their word and defend their constituents’ access to healthcare.
Despite their “concerns” over gutting healthcare and affordable groceries for Americans, Senate Republicans by-and-large fell in line to make life harder for their constituents, while giving their wealthy donors and corporations a tax cut. Now comes the time to see if the dozen Republicans in the House have vowed never to vote for a bill that guts healthcare will keep their word, or betray their constituents.”

Medicaid has been at the forefront of the reconciliation fight, with several Senate Republicans voicing strong concerns about cutting healthcare spending for millions of Americans. Despite their supposed alarm, Senators Hawley, Murkowski, Justice, Husted, and Budd, fell within party lines to gut healthcare for their constituents.
Similarly, a dozen congressional Republicans vowed to preserve Medicaid earlier this year, saying: “We cannot and will not support a final reconciliation bill that includes any reduction in Medicaid coverage for vulnerable populations.”
Those Republicans backtracked on their promise, and voted for historic cuts to Medicaid, with six of them setting themselves up to benefit from the Trump-endorsed tax plan.
