REMINDER: On ACA Anniversary, Trump and Congressional Republicans Still Fighting to Gut Your Healthcare and Raise Costs

Trump’s Tax Plan Will Gut Healthcare for Millions, Raise Costs for Even More
WASHINGTON, DC — On the 15th anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the program has built a historic legacy. According to Protect Our Care:
- More than 100 million Americans with preexisting conditions have their healthcare protected thanks to the ACA.
- Approximately 45 million people have health coverage thanks to the ACA.
- Since the ACA was enacted, the uninsured rate has dropped from 17.8% in 2010 to 9.6% in 2022.
- In 2024, a record 21.3 million Americans signed up for health coverage through the ACA Marketplace. The Inflation Reduction Act’s ACA premiums for people who buy their own coverage saved an average of $2,400 a year per family.
The sheer impact the ACA has had on hundreds of millions of Americans is without precedent.
But if Trump and Congressional Republicans have their way, healthcare will be ripped away from tens of millions of Americans and costs will go up for even more:
- On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act, an act that would take away tens of millions of Americans healthcare and hundreds of millions of Americans with preexisting conditions would see their plans put at risk. There is already a bill this session in Congress to repeal the ACA – sponsored by a top Trump ally.
- To pay for tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, the Trump-endorsed Congressional Republican tax bill would also sunset the Affordable Care Act premiums, which could hike premiums by as much as 300%, and put close to 4 million people in jeopardy of losing coverage of the premium tax credit, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
- They’re not done there. Congressional Republicans have openly floated $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid to pay for their tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, cuts that would immediately cause 3 million Americans to lose their coverage – with more to come.
The Affordable Care Act is a lifeline for the American people, expanding and protecting access to care for hundreds of millions and lowering costs for even more. As we mark this anniversary, the attacks on the ACA are more dire than ever. From full-throated efforts to try and repeal the law to the devastating cuts to the program to pay for tax cuts for billionaires, Trump and Congressional Republicans seem intent on ripping away healthcare from Americans all to benefit the ultra-rich.”
