Washington, D.C. — Today, government watchdog Accountable.US announced that Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has been identified as an enemy of progress due to his opposition to key issues like addressing climate change and making health care accessible for all. The group launched a new campaign, “Enemies of Progress,” outlining the potential threats that Schmitt and other Republican attorneys general around the country pose to advancements that support all Americans. Accountable.US also released its first report highlighting how Schmitt and others are using their positions as top law enforcement officials to defend their campaign donors, not their constituents.

“Instead of fighting for their best interests, Attorney General Schmitt is spending Missourians’ taxpayer dollars on frivolous lawsuits against the Biden administration on behalf of his special interest donors,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Nothing exemplifies how Schmitt routinely sells out the people of Missouri to corporate special interests than his continued crusade to undo the Affordable Care Act and take away patients’ health care in the middle of a deadly pandemic.”

This new campaign exposes some of the worst offenders who have proven to be working towards one goal in their capacity as their state’s top law enforcement official: to slow down or prevent progress on some of the country’s toughest issues. Schmitt is joined by another 12 “Enemies of Progress” including the attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia. In the coming days, the effort will be amplified with paid ads in key states, including on social media and traditional media websites.

“Poll after poll shows the public supports the Biden agenda, and any obstructionist who would abuse their power to protect profits of greedy special interests is an enemy of progress,” added Herrig.

Here’s more on why Attorney General Schmitt was selected as a top “Enemy of Progress”:

  • Put Lives At Risk: Even as COVID cases in Missouri were on the rise, Schmitt continued former MO AG Josh Hawley’s pursuit of trying to have the Affordable Care Act ruled unconstitutional.
  • Led Charge On Pointless Political Stunt To Sue China: Schmitt filed a case in U.S. District Court against the Chinese government and Chinese Communist Party for misrepresenting and concealing the seriousness of COVID. Legal experts panned the effort as a political stunt without legitimate basis.
  • Led Opposition To Proposal To Factor In Climate Change and Human Health When Determining Costs of New Gas Pipelines After Receiving Over $120,000 In Contributions From The Oil And Gas Industry: After receiving over $120,000 in contributions from the oil and gas industry, Schmitt led a 22 state comment letter to oppose use of a “social cost of carbon” analysis — or the impacts on the environment and human health — by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in decision making regarding interstate natural gas pipeline construction.
