Texas Tribune: “This demand comes after Paxton spoke at the pro-Trump rally in Washington, D.C., before the insurrection began, touting his unsuccessful legal effort to overturn the 2020 election”

Accountable.US: “The January 6 commission has taken a good first step in requesting more information on Texas Attorney General Paxton’s actions leading up to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, but they shouldn’t stop there”

Washington, D.C. — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is being investigated by the Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, which is requesting “all documents and communications referring or relating to the 2020 election results between White House officials and officials of State Governments,” the Texas Tribune reported. This comes on the heels of a letter sent by Accountable.US President Kyle Herrig to the January 6 committee calling on them to request key members of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) and its fundraising arm, the Rule of Law Defense Fund (RLDF) to testify regarding their role in the Capitol attack in front of the committee. 

“The January 6 commission has taken a good first step in requesting more information on Texas Attorney General Paxton’s actions leading up to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, but they shouldn’t stop there. If they want the whole truth, they must look into the Republican Attorney General Association and its leadership” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US. “Several other attorneys general deserve the committee’s scrutiny, including South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, RAGA’s chairman, Steve Marshall, the group’s policy chairman, and the groups itself — all of whom played a role in the events that led to the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.”  

RAGA has a long history of undermining our democracy and inciting violence. The day before the insurrection, RLDF sent out robocalls with a message instructing individuals to march to the Capitol and “call on Congress to stop the steal.” To this day, Alabama Attorney General and RLDF Chair Steve Marshall still maintains that he doesn’t know who authorized and paid for the robocalls, and has failed to clarify his whereabouts leading up to and directly following the insurrection. 

Leading up to the attack, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a frivolous lawsuit in an attempt to overturn the results of the election. Despite Paxton’s lack of evidence, 17 other attorneys general supported the case, including RLDF Chair Steve Marshall and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, who would later be named RAGA chairman. The lawsuit was tossed out by the Supreme Court for lack of standing. Paxton was also a headlining speaker at the rally that took place before violence erupted at the Capitol and told the crowd “we will not quit fighting.”

As Herrig points out, RAGA is deeply entrenched in dangerous attacks against our democracy, and bears a level of responsibility for the events that took place on January 6th. Requesting materials on Paxton is a great start, but the January 6 committee must look into the actions and whereabouts of Attorneys General Wilson, Marshall, and the whole of RAGA and RLDF.
